PlayStation OS Specs (What operating system does PS run?)

Hello All,

I am still trying to compile a page which compares the technical
specifications of each console generation in the Sony PlayStation family...

I think I am now there on the hardware side of things (unless anyone else
has any comments or more information), but I am now interested in the
software side of things, in particular the Operating System.

Does anyone have any information about the PS1 and PS2 operating systems? I
realise that both are Sony Proprietary, but can anyone fill in these gaps...

* Are they Multitasking?

* Is either console OS based (originally/loosly/core) on another existing
OS?

* Are either of the operating systems used in anyother hardware?

* What file system does either OS use?

* Is communication/networking built into either OS?

* Max file size??

* Image size?

* What GCC version does the PS1 and PS2 use?

* Libraries?

Basically, if anyone has any technical specifications of interest regarding
the PS1 and PS2 then please let me know, Google does not bring up much. I am
not looking for the information on the Linux kit for PS2 but the specs for
the OS that loads up (with the floating cubes on boot?)

As for the future PS3, there are rumours that it will be running on Linux,
does anyone have any more information on this?
