It looks like Ken Kutaragi is not going to be the next CEO of Sony.
Instead, British-born Howard Stringer has been selected to become Sony's
next CEO

but it gets worse for Ken Kutaragi, and potentially, the Playstation brand.
Not only is Kutaragi not going to become CEO of Sony, but it looks like Sony
is also NOT going to put Ken Kutaragi as head of SSNC ( Semiconductor
Solutions Network Company ) which is the newly combined operations of Sony
Group's chip-development and chip-manufacturing segments. this could
potentially be a SERIOUS BLOW to future semiconductor R&D efforts at Sony.
it is the semi-conductor R&D that has allowed Sony to develop PS1, PS2, PSP
and upcoming PS3.
while nothing is clear at the moment, and Sony is still sitting pretty with
PS2 sales, the newly released PSP which looks like it could devastate
Nintendo's handheld-dominance, and upcoming mega-powerful PS3, Sony could
be on the verge of some catastropic fuck-ups with regard to the
Playstation brand, its bread winner.
the utter failure of the highend PS2 called PSX (not PS1) is probably only
a small reason for the ousting of Kutaragi from top management postitions.
something that Kutaragi's rivals within Sony are no doubt gloating over.
Kutaragi is hated by a great deal of higher ups in the company.
the main thing is, it is not really a disaster that Kutaragi is not going to
be CEO of Sony. the potential disaster is ripping Kutaragi away from the top
of Sony's semiconductor operations (SSNC). It isn't clear yet exactly what
has happened, and is happening, within Sony right now. the dust has not
settled yet.
Will this effect Playstation3's sucess ? that remains to be seen. but it
could easily allow competitors to crush Sony after the PS3 generation if
Sony flounders with post-PS3 R&D efforts. Nintendo, Microsoft, or even
Sammy-Sega could overtake Sony at the end of PS3's lifecycle, or before, but
most likely, after PS3 has its day in the sun.
